Canon EOS R System
Unrivaled lens technology with a system of the future today.
When I work, I want to be able to focus on the story and the pictures. It should feel right and comfortable, like an extension of myself, and I don't want to have to think about the technology. The RF lenses I tested were fast, sharp, and, above all, robust and durable. I appreciate that Canon didn't make any compromises with these lenses.
Canon has been perfecting the EOS series for over three decades. After years of development in September 2018, Canon launched the crown jewel of EOS: the EOS R system, including their first-ever mirrorless full-frame camera, followed by four unique RF lenses.
Based around a pioneering lens mount that offers greater possibilities of capturing every moment, the EOS R System nowadays includes three camera bodies and ten RF lenses. The RF lenses provide higher quality and unforeseen speed for many different lighting conditions and environments. EOS R System adapters offer even more creative control, as photographers can use their existing EF and EF-S lenses with full compatibility and no loss in performance.
Agility in a compact package
The EOS R System and especially its lens technologies have found instant success among professional photographers. When Canon Ambassador, photojournalist Magnus Wennman traveled to Iraq in October 2019 on an assignment to overview the refugee situation in northern Syria, Canon equipped him with an EOS R camera and RF 85mm f/1.2 L USM, RF 24-70mm f/2.8 L IS USM, and RF 24-105mm f/4 L IS USM lenses.
“When I´m out on assignment, it’s important that my camera has good battery time, and everything works hassle-free. Sometimes you need something more robust, while other times, you want something more agile – and EOS R is agile. Even though all the features are in a small camera body, it still feels very professional. I have not experienced a shift like this during my career. The last time something this extreme happened was when we went from film to digital. It was a revolution, but, a lot has not happened since then. Now you can feel that the next step is coming.”
Magnificent lenses for every lighting
The RF lenses have been specially designed to produce sharp and high-quality images in every light. Magnus Wennman has discovered that the advantages of the EOS R system are particularly noticeable in situations where you are working with natural light since you can see the exposure directly in the camera’s digital viewfinder.
“Much of visual arts and photography relates to finding the right light. EOS R and its lenses worked very well during my latest trip, where we had extremely poor lighting conditions. Being able to see the exposure clearly while at the same time, adjusting sharpness perfectly was a very positive experience.”
Video features
RF lenses are a perfect tool for creating videos, as they are fast, bright, and well suited for capturing wide-angle perspectives. For Magnus Wennman, who nowadays splits his time almost equally between photos and videos, the small camera body and its variable-angle display combined with the lens range have huge advantages when shooting video. Wennman has been pleasantly surprised with the movie feature of EOS R and finds that both the AF servo and the touchscreen work well.
“The camera has a good screen to look at when working with video. I liked that it was very uncomplicated. Another good feature of this camera is that you can shoot with the camera up at your eye and quickly switch from photo to video – with a simple push of a button, which made it very agile and stable. It’s a feature I have been longing for.”
At the end of 2019, the EOS R System includes three camera bodies and ten RF lenses. Canon EOS R is a pioneering full-frame mirrorless camera for expanding your vision. Canon EOS RP is a small, lightweight, and intuitive full-frame mirrorless camera designed for travel and everyday photography. Canon EOS Ra has been designed for professional enthusiasts looking for a compact and lightweight astrophotography tool.
“When I work, I want to be able to focus on the story and the pictures. It should feel right and comfortable, like an extension of myself, and I don’t want to have to think about the technology. The RF lenses I tested were fast, sharp, and, above all, robust and durable. I appreciate that Canon didn’t make any compromises with these lenses.”
